Discourse on the Origin of Inequality
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (April, 1900)
Authors: Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Patrick Coleman
Average review score:

A Perfect Example of the 18th Century Enlightenment.
This is a wonderful example of the 18th century enlightenment. In this work, Rousseau states that inequalities of rank, wealth, and power are the inevitable result of the civilizing process, something most of us have found to be very true if unfair. This new translation also includes all of Rousseau's own notes.

I enjoyed this tremendously, and am always amazed that the thought pattern and process is oneof the few things that hasn't changed over the centuries.

Excellant
Excellent discourse. This book discusses some of the rudiments of the history of inequality and how its self supporting and ever existing in human nature. I recommend this book for those readers who either want to increase their knowledge on Jean-Jacques Rousseau or historical development of inequality

For those who want to further their command over Rousseau's life- I suggest them to read 'Confessions' by Rousseau.

The garden of eden
I find Rousseau especially creative in the way he describes how inequality progressed from the time the first humans made contact. He makes a good case for the solitary life. I think Rousseau believes it is destructive whenever humans come together in groups. Governments were formed to protect the weaker from the stronger or as Rousseau thinks to actually protect the rich from the poor. This is an outstanding book. It will haunt you.

Effective Executive's Guide to Microsoft Word 2002
Published in Paperback by Redmond Technology, Inc. (15 April, 2001)
Author: Pat Coleman
Average review score:

An excellent, practical guide
I think this book is terrific. Anyone writing a book about computer software should be required to study this book first. It gets to the heart of what you need to know and doesn't hesitate to tell you what you might not want to use (like the grammar checker and the indexing feature). Best of all are the really useful sidebars. For example, as the author admits, it is really easy to get a word count--the hard part is what to do if the document is too long, and her sidebar on the subject is really helpful. Examples of other excellent sidebars are "Seven Rules for Creating Great Lists" that accompanies the section on Numbered and Bulleted Lists and "Dealing With Criticism" (both how to accept it and how to offer it) that goes with the section on Tracking Changes. If you're looking for a really useful guide to Word's most important features, this is the book to get.

Worthwhile guide to Word 2002
A very well written book that not only helps you navigate through the latest version of Word but also provides many helpful hints and suggestions for better business writing. Highly recommend this for those looking to improve their business use of Word.

Covers basics of Word and of writing well
This book covers all the basics of using Word--all the same information you'd get from a Dummies book or one of Microsoft Press's Step-by-Step books. In addition to that information, Effective Executive's Guide to Word also provides lots of advice and information about how to write better, including info on writing business memos, emails, etc. Most business users would never need more information than this book provides. And everybody who wants to write better reports, memos, etc, will benefit from the author's tips.

Something for everyone
Though I've been working with Windows for almost 10 years, I still learned new tricks with this book. Of course I skipped over some basic parts, but I can see how others might find the background information useful. As an added bonus, the book has a nice glossary and index to facilitate searching for specific topics.

A Reference or a Tutorial
This book is an effective step-by-step guide to using Windows 2000. Although it is not intended for the system administrator, it is a thorough discussion of all of Window 2000's functionality. Effective Executive Guide to Windows 2000 is as useful as a reference for the experienced user as it is as a tutorial for the Newbie.

The Gift to Be Simple: Life in the Amish Country
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (May, 2001)
Author: Bill Coleman
Average review score:

outstanding
Having grown up in Ohio and having to go through Amish country in eastern Indiana this book brought back
so many memories. The pictures are wonderful and bring out the beauty of the Amish way of life. I have always
been fascinated with the Amish and was fortunate enough to get into an Amish home in Indiana and ths book brings about the essence of these plain, and simple people. It is a book that I will always treasure because of it's beauty and simplicity. It certainly needs no words to accompany the pictures. The pictures of the children certainly show their enjoyment of life.

A Shared Gift
I have many books of photographs and this is the most beautiful one I have seen. It was a gift to me that Bill Coleman shared these photos!

He has managed to capture the spirit of the Amish - their simple life and their everyday lifestyle. You see their spirit shining through in these photos. The children are particularly beautiful and look so happy and innocent.

The photos of the landscape are equally wonderful. It was only on my third *reading* of this book that I realized what they were missing : electric poles and wires. These photos could have been taken 100 years ago, the landscape is so unspoiled!

I thank Bill Coleman for giving me this glimpse into the Amish world. Although I live not far from where he took these photos, they allowed me an inside look.

Beautiful...
The photography in this collection is outstanding. It is, not only a glimpse into Amish life, but it is extremely beautiful artwork.

The photgrapher captures the simplicity of Amish life in well-executed images. The photographs cover all aspects of Amish life, without being overly intrusive.

If you have ever been fascinated with the Amish lifestyle, pick up this beautiful book.

While I understand the lack of description, [the editor/author did not want to draw away from the simplicity of the photographs--and the point of this book is simplicity], I think that something was missing in this respect.

If you are looking for the definitive book on Amish, I would have to tell you to pick up this book AND something with more written information. The combination would be a great asset.

I cannot, however, detract from the five stars that I have given this book, simply because of its beauty. It is wonderful.

Handbook of GYN Oncology
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Professional (25 July, 2001)
Authors: Joseph T. Santoso and Robert L. Coleman
Average review score:

From a Medical Student
There is great, easy to access information in this pocketbook not only on the subject of Gyn Onc, but also on the medical management of patients, which is so important in the practice of Gyn. Oncology. The medical management section is broken down by systems (e.g., neuro, pulmonary, etc.).

Handbook of Gyn Oncology is a beneficial pocketbook not only for students/residents on a Gyn Onc rotation, but also for students and residents on other medical or surgical rotations (I've used it both on Dr. Santoso's rotation and in other months). Whether you need to know what the risks for HIV or hepatitis transmission during hemotransfusion or how/when to dose heparin or fresh frozen plasma, it's in this book. This pocketbook also contains descriptions of commonly performed surgical procedures in gynecologic oncology, as well as sections on chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Dr. Santoso is considered one of the finest clinical educators at The University of Tennessee, and his book is concise, thorough, and highly recommended.

Resident's perspective
This handbook is concise, yet packed with the kind of information you need at the bedside, on rounds, or in preparation for the OR. Several of the sections have clear tables which make quick reference possible. And the procedures section provide clear step by step instructions for most all cases.

editorial review
I wrote this handbook to be as a practical guide for residents/fellows/ students and other clinicians in taking care gyn onc patients. Gyn onc patients are unique in the sense that they are surgical patients but usually with many medical problems (HTN, DM, COPD,etc). Thus, this handbook was written more like a combination of the surgery handbook + the Washington manual. my residents and fellows at UT Southwestern/Parkland and UTMB especially found the complication management section to be helpful in taking care their sick patients in the middle of the night. The chemo section is as update it as the GOG manual. I kept the book small enough to be pocket size, thus, easier to carry around.

This books is written for clinicians like you. thus, any feedback from you will be appreciated and incorporated to the next edition. thanks...

A Journal with the Poetry of Rumi

Gave it as a gift to a BIG Rumi fan
I was looking for a unique gift from Rumi to give to a very close friend, and this was GREAT! She really loved it, its very beautifully made, and lots of beautiful art and poetry, and room for her to write her own thoughts and poetry.

Its great as a journal and especially for those who get inspired from Rumi. GREAT GIFT!

Excellent Mindfulness.
Rumi settles the soul and opens the mind. His poetry inspires honesty from the depths of your being. Having this journal with his poetry can only bring the truth onto paper. It's your journal, your thoughts, and his influence.

The Rumi journal feels sacred
This journal is stunning. It's so inspiring, too. Whenever I pick it up, I feel like I'm holding a sacred text. The artwork is beautiful and Rumi's quotes are so moving. Here's my favorite: "Stop the words now. Open the window in the center of your chest, and let spirit fly in and out." I really love this journal and recommend it. It fills me with such peace.

The Oinky Boinky Machine
Published in Paperback by Piccolo Pr (October, 1992)
Author: Preston Coleman
Average review score:

hilarious satire, fun read, yet dead serious
It just hit me on so many levels, I can't nail down any single one. There was some bursting of icons, maybe even lampooning the idea of heroism itself, with a possible interpretation being that the story is a satire on Christianity or whatever messianic religion or cult. It really seems to needle you with questions about faith and following, winding up being a very funny satire on modern times and culture, and on hero worship.

awesome story!
This guy is cool. The story is awesome

This is a funny, charming satire, appealing on many levels.
Preston Coleman's "The Oinky Boinky Machine" is one of those books that reveals new meanings each time it is read. A simple story about a likable ostrich's near-single-handed demolition of a murderous bureaucracy, Coleman's fable is a brilliant indictment of whatever parasitic system the reader chooses to superimpose onto the Oinky Boinky Machine itself. To some, the machine will be the government, to others the University system, to still others corporate America. As the reader slides different allegorical interpretations into place, he or she realizes that the various machines are simply different heads of the same hydra--and the humble Jonathan Livingston Ostrich the voicebox of all oppressed, exploited and damaged folks who never thought they had it in them to triumph over the unbeatable. Coleman tells his story with humor, charm, and thankfully some good scatalogical satire. "The Oinky Boinky Machine" is an easy read that raises difficult questions.

Gis lgne's ypm Gxligy.
"Gis lgne's ypm Gxligy." What? That's what Rob, Tamsyn and Josh are thinking as they read the latest "sea-mail" message from the yachtsman Brad. You see after almost 3 weeks crossing the Atlantic, Brad's PC is suffering from the moisture so that his important email message has been garbled.

And, important it is! The Internet Detectives in Portsmouth (Rob, Tamsyn, and Josh), in Toronto (Lauren and her Grandmother Allie), in Perth Australia (Tom) and Mitch (New York) have solved an international art theft. But they haven't got the painting or caught the crook yet.

That garbled "sea-mail" message sent via a radio modem in mid-Atlantic holds the final clues to recovering the painting and locking away the crook.

The Internet Detectives is one of the best Internet mystery series - all the books are good.

Kewl Book!!
I thought this book was just going to be another stupid internet book written by people who know nothing about the net, but it was pretty good! And I thought that the fact that Rob is disabled was pretty cool too.

Geat book.
I thought this book was really exciting. It began when Mitch found a painting and then Tamsyn, Rob, and Josh find an article saying that a painting just like the one Mitch had was stolen from a museum near where Mitch was walking when he found the fake painting. Then Mitch finds out that the suspect of the theft was a man that had been in the Cyber Snax Cafe. Then the kids receive an important message that will help them catch the thief.....

Student Serendipity Bible
Published in Hardcover by Zondervan (September, 1997)
Authors: Lyman Coleman and Zondervan Publishing
Average review score:

HS Youth Group
The Serendipity Student Bible is excellent. I use it to lead our Youth Group. Either the kids or I pick a topic that is applicable to them at that particular time. For each topic, there is a fun "Ice-Breaker" (game) followed by a "Story Passage" and then a "Teaching Passage". Both of the Passages also have 7-8 questions that are great for facilitating a fun and thought provoking conversation.

An Excellent Bible
This Bible provides the student with not only a comeplete NIV Bible but also a vast array of historical and cultural information before each book. The Serendipity Bible also gives a wonderful outline for personal and small group studies. If you lead a small youth group or wish to guide yourself through the Bible the Serendipity Bible is the perfect place to start!

Great for Teenagers
Teaching Bible and value classes to over 300 students every year, I assure you that this is an excellent choice for working with youth. It contains study plans, questions, and excellent footnotes, appendices, and tables. Great!
